See, that’s what the app is perfect for.

Sounds perfect Wahhhh, I don’t wanna

The Martian

I don’t write movie reviews on here often-mainly because my taste in movies can be kinda out there.  I’m a huge fan of horror, action, sci-fi and sports movies, so I just tend to leave actual reviews off my blog.  Though occasionally, I will mention a good movie we’ve seen.

And that’s what I’m doing here.  I knew Roy wanted to see this movie, and after watching the trailer and reading a few early reviews, I figured why not?  We could do a date Saturday-we went and had lunch and then saw the movie.

WOW!

I mean, that’s my first thought.  I Loved this movie, loved it. In fact, it’s easily in my top five of all time.

If you’ve seen the trailer, none of this is new to you. Matt Damon (a great everyman) plays astronaut/botanist Mark Watney.  Jessica Chastain (who I have liked every since seeing her in The Help) plays his commander Melissa Lewis.  Along with Kate Mara, Michael Pena, Sebastian Stan, and Aksei  Hennie-the six of them are on a Mission to Mars.  Early on, we get notice that a storm is coming in, and not just any storm-strong enough to cause Lewis to make the decision to abort the mission-about 12 days early.  Pena-playing Pilot Rick Martinez-gets their pod (I’m sorry, I’m not sure what it’s called!) ready, but along the way debris hits Damon, and he is swept away.  The crew makes the heartbreaking decision to leave when they get readings that his suit has malfunctioned. Believing him to be dead, they push that button and leave.

And again, if you’ve seen the trailer, you know Damon isn’t dead.  Instead what we see is a man against all odds, with seemingly no hope learn to survive.  Damon’s character is a genius that is established early on-but he’s the everyman smart guy. The guy you turn to for help, as opposed to the pompous ass you want nothing to do with.

I’ll come right out and say that there is a LOT going on here.  Jeff Daniels is the Director of NASA, and he comes off as prickly, almost unfeeling.Kristen Wiig (LOVE HER!) Plays Annie Montross -NASA’s PR go to person, and it was great to see Wiig playing it straight. The always wonderful Chiwetel Eijofer plays Vincent Kapoor-Head of Mars Missions (that is not his actual title in the movie, but you get the idea.)

Without giving too much away, a plan is hatched to save Damon’s character, but along the way we see him learn to grow potatoes, when he realizes his food supply won’t last very long.  We see him figure out a way to communicate with NASA.  We watch the heartbreak on the crew’s face as they learn he is still alive, and we rejoiced as we watched Damon learn to overcome every obstacle put in his way.

I haven’t seen a movie this well done in years-as many players as Director Ridley Scott put in here, not one dropped the ball. Every frantic line uttered, every measured action-all worked.

And I left the theater…happy!  I felt hopeful, and of course I’m not a botanist, or an astronaut, but you get the feeling that if Damon can figure out how to grow potatoes on Mars, I can deal with a leaky roof!  And yes, I know it’s a movie-but when a movie is this good, it allows you to escape for a little while.  And couldn’t we all use a break?

See it-if you don’t, you’re truly missing out!
