See, that’s what the app is perfect for.

Rabid Loyalty

The past few years has seen us (maybe me more specifically) bitten by the cruising bug.  It all started in July of 2011, or I should say it started in November 2010.  It had been a few years since we taken any kind of family vacation, and as I looked around I realized that the boys were getting real big, real fast. On Thanksgiving morning, as Roy and I were taking on the supreme undertaking of getting the turkey out of the brining bucket, I laid out my plan.

“Can we please take a family vacation this summer?” I asked my husband.

“What did you have in mind?” He asked with his arm shoved in the turkey’s butt. (Ok, that sounds weird, but they are slippery suckers!)

“I don’t care!” I told him, “Disneyworld, Universal Studios, maybe a house at the beach. The kids are growing so fast, I want to do something as a family.”

“Sure honey.” Was his reply as he lifted the turkey out; SUCCESS!

And I’m not kidding. That evening we got an email and then a phone call fro Roy’s parents laying out their idea. They wanted to take EVERYONE (our family, my sister in law and her family and themselves) on a cruise. They would pay for the grandkids.  WHAT?!

Now, I admit, I wasn’t sold on the idea of a cruise, but this was an opportunity to do something new, and Roy and I only had to pay for ourselves.  We jumped on it. And I was hooked.

Ok, back to my original point.

After that first cruise, we were hooked. The kids loved it, Roy loved it and I certainly loved it! In fact, I was planning our next cruise on the drive home from the first one!  So, to learn all the little tips, to get ideas, I joined forums on FB, and the rabid loyalty of any given cruise lines fans is crazy!

Now, luckily Roy and I have the same view: life’s too short not to explore options.  Our first few cruises was on Carnival-and they were amazing.  They treat you like royalty, the staff is always willing to help out, and they are so friendly.  But this past December, we found a great deal on a Royal Caribbean Cruise.  Being the planner I am, I joined a few Royal groups.

And the way people behave-it’s insane!  You ask a simple question about say, tipping (there is a set amount per day per person that is automatically charged to your room) and if you don’t pay the automatic fee-you are a horrible person, as in they will call you names and hang you out to dry.

And heaven forbid you try to compare the two!  You will be ripped to shreds by Carnival fans for even saying anything remotely nice about Royal Caribbean!

But this doesn’t just extend to cruise lines. TV shows (soap fans are the WORST!), books, movies, music, hotels-anything the rabid loyalty of true fans gets nasty real quick.

Now, I admit my loyalty to certain people can get ugly if I feel they are threatened: my husband, our kids, my friends, and yes, my pets.  And while I like certain things very much-say a certain TV show and I might even debate about a certain storyline-I’m not going to threaten your spouse if you don’t like the same show I do.

Politics-yes, I can get pretty heated about, but again, as long as debate is civilized, who cares if you agree with me or not?

There is nothing that I can think of that is perfect-any business, book, movie, TV show, etc can do little things to improve their image, brand, etc. the idea of not being able to criticize something is frankly ridiculous.

I mean, I don’t like to be criticized-when I read a bad review of my book-something I slaved over, cried over and poured myself into-it hurts, but it’s also given me ideas on what works and what doesn’t for next time.

I truly believe that the day you stop learning is the day you die, and I think that applies to everyone-corporations and businesses included.
